CLAS units announce name changes

June 29, 2017

Effective with the 2017-18 academic catalog, two units within the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences will change their names to better reflect their areas of study.

The Department of Geography will become the Department of Geographic and Atmospheric Sciences. Only the department name is changing, the degree names and course prefixes for geography and meteorology will stay the same. The department will welcome Dr. Victor Gensini, who will join NIU’s Meteorology program in the fall. His addition builds on the program’s research profile and continues NIU’s tradition as the oldest meteorology undergraduate program in the state. Gensini appeared with NIU’s Walker Ashley on the Weather Channel’s April 9 and June 25 program “Weather Geeks.”

The Center for Non-Governmental Organization Leadership and Development (NGOLD) will become the Center for Nonprofit and NGO Studies. The degree name “community leadership and civic engagement” will become “nonprofit and NGO studies,” with a course prefix of NNGO. It’s still the same unique program that prepares students for a career with nonprofit organizations or in the fields of philanthropy, public service or community engagement. The new director will be announced to the Huskie family in the near future.
