GSRC hosting a friendly donation competition this summer

May 30, 2017

The Gender and Sexuality Resource Center (GSRC) is preparing for the fall 2017 semester Clothing Expo and they’re seeking donations of clothes and household/residence hall-room items in a friendly competition between offices and departments, the winner will receive a special award. The GSRC will judge which office/department donated the most clothing and/or household/residence hall-room items by Thursday, June 22.

The items will be counted based on the number of donations brought into the center, measured by the number of bagged, hanged, or boxed clothes and the number of household/dorm-room items donated. In an effort to ensure fairness in counting the donations; each time your office/department makes a donation, we will have you sign in, indicating the amount donated.

Gently used or new items of clothing (professional and casual wear) for college students as well as children will be accepted. Donations can also include seasonal items such as coats, hats, gloves, dress accessories and shoes (gently-worn or new), handbags, backpacks, portfolios, pens, pencils, notebooks, etc. Additionally, household and residence hall-room items that are in great working condition will be accepted. Unfortunately, extremely large items, such as furniture, cannot be stored. However, feel free to call to inquire before bringing them to donate. All donations can be dropped off at the GSRC between 8 a.m. – 3 p.m. Receipts of donations will be provided upon individual request.

If your office/department donates the most items by June 22, you will receive the Golden Hanger Award! This award will represent the office/department that went above and beyond to collaboratively help us provide students with free resources while at NIU. The Golden Hanger winner will be announced in NIU Today in July as well as featured in a display presentation during the Clothing EXPO program to be held in September. Each office/department that donated will be mentioned during a visual presentation at the Clothing EXPO. The winner will be able to keep the Golden Hanger for one year and then it will be forwarded to its new location for next year’s winner.

We are calling all Huskies to unite in effort over the next few weeks to show their Huskie pride and donate! For more information, contact the GSRC office at 815-753-4772.
