First- and Second-Year Experience seeks faculty/staff mentors for new students

May 1, 2017

First- and Second-Year Experience (FSYE) is looking for NIU faculty and supportive professional staff who are interested in volunteering their time to mentor new students during their transition to NIU this fall 2017.

Student-Faculty Links, a component of FSYE, gives NIU faculty and supportive professional staff a unique opportunity to reach out and help make a difference in the lives of new students. The basis for being an effective mentor is simply caring about the success of our first-year students. Feedback collected from students in the fall 2016 cohort agreed that this experience enabled them to feel more comfortable engaging with faculty and staff, and making connections on campus.

We invite you to fill out a short survey to match you with a new student who has similar personal or academic interests. Mentors and students are notified in early August with each other’s contact information and are invited to attend an informal “meet and greet” kickoff event hosted by FSYE in early fall. All meetings thereafter are scheduled by the mentor and the student mentee to best fit their needs. FSYE offers support in various ways as the mentor-mentee relationship is developed throughout the semester.

Involvement with this program is highly beneficial to new students seeking guidance and encouragement to make their college experience more successful and enjoyable. We cannot do it without you. Please apply today to make a difference in the life of a first-year NIU student!

Register online to be a mentor. Priority deadline for applications is Monday, July 3. The final deadline is Tuesday, August 1.
