The NIU Department of Police and Public Safety (NIU PD) has published the 2017 NIU Emergency Response Guide. The guide — designed for students, faculty, staff and visitors — provides basic information and recommended responses to a wide array of potential emergencies.
“It’s general enough that anyone who picks it up can quickly implement a plan of action based on the recommendations in the guide,” said NIU Chief of Police Tom Phillips.
“Supervisors should review the guide with their employees and consider how they would respond in the varying emergency situations,” said Phillips. “With early conversation and mental preparation, our actions can be more effective in emergencies.”
“Emergency response is a shared responsibility,” continued Phillips. “It’s often too late to prepare when the time comes to respond, therefore early preparation in emergency planning is key to the overall success of the response.”
The NIU PD also offers an online training module that expands on the topics covered in the emergency guide.
