Cor Cantiamo CD cover: “Canticum: The Choral Music of Jaakko Mäntyjärvi”Cor Cantiamo, a touring chamber choir in residence at the NIU School of Music, was awarded a grant from the Farny R. Wurlitzer Foundation Fund.

The fund provides assistance to further music education, music appreciation and performance; Cor Cantiamo received the grant through the DeKalb County Community Foundation.

“We are grateful to the Wurlitzer Foundation Fund for this grant to help expand our mission to perform and promote contemporary choral music and foster new composers for the art form,” said Eric Johnson, founding artistic director of Cor Cantiamo and director of choral activities in the NIU School of Music.

“Connections like these in the community mean a great deal to us and we hope we can keep them strong,” Johnson added. “The support we receive in DeKalb County is an essential building block in supporting our mission. The Wurlitzer Foundation Grant will benefit the goals at the heart of our organization.”

At one time, Johnson said, “the Wurlitzer Company was known as ‘the name that means music to millions.’ ”

“We hope to highlight that one-time slogan and bring music to as many of those millions as we can,” he said. “Through this grant, our possibilities have grown, and we hope to reach even more individuals because of it.”

Cor Cantiamo was founded in 2009 with the mission to perform and promote contemporary choral music and foster new composers for the art form. Since that spring, the choir has emerged as an energetic and accomplished vocal ensemble, receiving accolades for its performances.
