CSA Sinfonia to perform February 18 concert

Photo of a violinThe Community School of the Arts presents the annual CSA Sinfonia Winter Concert at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 18, in the Boutell Memorial Concert Hall of the NIU Music Building.

The CSA Sinfonia welcomes guest violinist, 2014 Concerto Competition winner Katherine Gallagher, to the Concert Hall stage to perform music by H. Vieuxtemps.

Gallagher, 18, is the Marlou and Kenneth Johnston Fellow at the Music Institute of Chicago Academy, a training center for gifted pre-college musicians. She studies violin with artist faculty members Almita and Roland Vamos; her previous teachers include Thomas Wermuth, Nancy Jackson and Beth Novak.

A two-time winner of Elgin Youth Symphony Orchestra’s Concerto Competition and winner of DuPage Symphony’s Young Artists Auditions, she has won honors in Elmhurst Symphony’s Stanger Competition, West Suburban Symphony Orchestra’s Concerto Competition and the DePaul Concerto Competition.

Gallagher also has soloed with the Elgin Symphony as part of their Kidz Concerts series.

The Winter Concert also features music by Grieg and Holst. Linc Smelser directs the CSA Sinfonia, and admission to the concert is free.
