Kristina Elmore, a sophomore time arts/animation major from Kirkland, is the winner of the 2014 President’s Holiday Card Contest.

Her card, “Huskie’s Holiday,” is among four that will serve this year as NIU President Doug Baker’s official holiday card, which is mailed to colleagues and constituents throughout Illinois and across the country.

“My motto is, ‘Never give up hope.’ This quote is a reflection of myself overcoming through many obstacles as I was growing up. Now I am in college fulfilling my dreams – couldn’t ask for anything more,” says Elmore, who receives $500 as the winning artist.

“Someday, I want to be able to create my own shot film with my own animation and characters,” she adds. “I also would like to be able to work for any big-known company, whether it’s helping to edit, film or create something that would be a part of any (other) projects.”

Joining Elmore in the winner’s circle are sophomore visual communications major Ali Helton’s (“Forward Together with Holiday Spirit”), fourth-year painting major Sabrina Garcia’s (“NIU Pride in the Holidays”) and senior visual communications major Krischel Galima’s (“Huskie Sweater”).

All of the top four entries “conveyed Huskie spirit as well as the sensation of the winter holiday season,” says Ellen Andersen, director of Special Events at NIU.

“We were tremendously impressed with the number and quality of entries this year. Narrowing it down to four was extremely difficult,” Andersen says. “We want to thank all of the participants, applaud you for your work and encourage you to enter again next year if you will still be on campus.”

Beginning Monday, Dec. 1, the cards will be available as a box set in exchange for a donation to the NIU Student Scholarship Program.
