Say hello! Volunteers needed for Huskie Family Welcome

August 6, 2014

Band Run 2013Organizers of the Huskie Family Welcome are looking for volunteers among upperclass students and staff to join the festivities on the afternoon/evening of Opening Day, Friday, Aug. 22.

For those who are interested in providing lots of HUSKIE cheer and assisting us in welcoming the incoming class of students and their guests into the Huskie Family, several opportunities are available.

The first event is the Family Resource Fair & Dinner for parents and families of new students. NIU will provide a casual dinner and resource fair at the Convocation Center, just preceding the Huskie Family Welcome (formerly Academic Convocation).

Volunteers are needed to help families find their way between the resource fair and dinner locations, to keep the dinner seating area pleasant and welcoming and to direct people to seats for the Huskie Family Welcome. This event needs the greatest number of volunteers.

While parents and families are busy eating, first-year students will be making their way to the Convocation Center with the annual Band Run. As in years past, the Huskie Marching Band will lead students across campus, beginning at Neptune, stopping at each residential complex to pick up students on the way to Huskie Family Welcome. Volunteers are needed to assist with handing out Northern PACT T-shirts at the residence halls and to help the students and families get seated at the Convocation Center.

The final opportunity for the day’s events is the Huskie Family Welcome (formerly known as Academic Convocation) to celebrate as new students and their families join our community. The organizers need volunteers to help students and families find seats, distribute programs and provide general directions within the Convocation Center, before and after the event.

Volunteer registration is available online. The greatest need for volunteers is at the Family Resource Fair & Dinner, but there are a few spots left in other areas as well.

Thanks in advance for helping welcome new students and their families into the NIU Huskie Family! Also, check out the full Welcome Days schedule to see what else NIU has in store for students.
