Joseph D. Lovelace recently joined the campus community as director of Students’ Legal Assistance, a function of the Division of Student Affairs & Enrollment Management.

Lovelace succeeds Don Henderson, who retired in June.

Students’ Legal Assistance, housed in the Campus Life Building, provides NIU students with advice and consultation, legal advocacy, and in appropriate cases, court representation.

“I want students to feel that they can come to our office to discuss anything that is going on in their lives,” says Lovelace. “They should not just come to us when they have problems. We can help students make decisions and, often, help them avoid problems.”

Attorney Lovelace joins NIU following several years at Illini Legal Services, where he managed the firm’s relationship with many community-based organizations, directed a firm-sponsored legal aid program, and assisted clients with a variety of civic, financial, and family law matters.

Lovelace previously operated his own law practice and remains active in various Bar Associations. In addition to his well-rounded professional experience, Lovelace is fluent in Spanish and brings a passion for sports, literature, and art to his new role in assisting Huskies with their legal questions.
