NIU President Doug Baker

I have the privilege this weekend of presiding over Northern Illinois University’s spring commencement exercises. It will be my honor to welcome approximately 3,100 students to the ranks of our alumni, who number more than 225,000.

It is very uplifting to see our graduates move on to their careers, continue graduate studies or find other personal successes in life. The stories of their incredible journeys – academic and career experience, social growth and self-discovery – are truly inspiring.

As we approach this festive time, I encourage our graduating students to reflect on those moments at NIU that have transformed them as individuals, as these are the moments they should seek out for the rest of their lives.

Remember the lessons learned in the classroom; the academic, technical and critical-thinking skills taught there prepare our graduates for personal or career success in a 21st century global economy.

Cherish the friendships made; these are relationships that will last a lifetime.

And always remember what it means to be a Huskie. Stay involved with NIU. There is no greater gift alumni can give than their time, talents and successes to give young Huskies a hand up.

To Bold Futures,
