Themed Learning Communities seek peer leaders

May 7, 2014

TLC!The Office of Student Engagement & Experiential Learning is now accepting applications for peer leaders for the Fall 2014 Themed Learning Communities.

A Themed Learning Community (TLC) includes two to three courses taken together to examine a common theme, such as the natural sciences, humanities and social sciences. Students enrolled in TLCs are able to building relationships with other first-years as well as with faculty through increased time together. Students in TLCs are able to work with an experienced, upper-class peer leader.

Peer leaders work from five hours and seven hours per week during the semester, assisting first-year students with successful study habit development, involvement on campus and the transition to college. Peer leaders attend at least one TLC class per week, coordinate and host study sessions which meet once a week, assist with field trips (depending on the TLC) and follow up with students.

Benefits of becoming a TLC peer leader include:

  • Mentoring experience with first-year students
  • Professional development
  • Networking with NIU faculty and staff
  • Deeper understanding of course work through academic assistance to TLC students
