First provost candidate to visit NIU Wednesday, Thursday

Altgeld HallExcellent finalists for the position of NIU executive vice president and provost have been chosen and will be coming to campus over the next month to meet with faculty, students and staff and to see the university.

The first candidate, Martin Abraham, will be on campus for interviews Wednesday, April 2, and Thursday, April 3. Abraham is the founding, and current, dean of the College of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics at Youngstown State University in Ohio, and chair of the Ohio Engineering Deans Council. He is a professor of civil/environmental and chemical engineering at Youngstown State and was previously dean of the College of Graduate Studies at the University of Toledo.

Abraham received his B.S. in chemical engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in 1982 and his Ph.D. in chemical engineering from the University of Delaware in 1987. He has had a distinguished academic career featuring 75 refereed publications, 136 presentations, 38 invited presentations and three books. He also was an editor of several special issues in professional journals or proceedings.

He has been awarded more than 50 research grants from both public and private sources including the NSF, Department of Transportation, the U.S. Army and the Department of Energy.

All members of the NIU community are invited to meet with the candidate at one of the following three forums:

  • Faculty are invited to meet with Abraham in an open forum from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. Thursday, April 3, in the Holmes Student Center, Illinois Room.
  • University Staff and members of the community are invited to meet with Abraham in an open forum from 10:45 to 11:45 a.m. Thursday, April 3, in Altgeld Hall, Room 315.
  • Students are invited to meet with Abraham in an open forum from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 2, in Altgeld Hall, Room 315.

All individuals attending the forums will have an opportunity to provide written feedback to the president. Feedback forms will be distributed at the forums.

Announcements with the details for the visits of the other candidates will be made in the week before their campus visits. Those forthcoming visits will take place April 10 and 11 and April 16 and 17.
