Guadalupe Lopez, a psychology major and 2013 Forward, Together Forward Scholar, is the recipient of a $1,000 scholarship from the Illinois Latino Council on Higher Education.

The scholarships are awarded to Latino/a students in Illinois who exhibit outstanding commitment to learning, community service and leadership. Nearly 250 applicants were considered this year.

Lopez and co-winner Ruben Rodriguez of Aurora University will be honored Friday, March 21, during the ILCAHE annual conference at Roosevelt University.

At NIU, Lopez promotes issues of college access, choice, affordability and support for undocumented students. In addition to involvement in fundraising activities, she was instrumental in coordinating Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals informational workshops in DeKalb during the 2012-2013 academic year.

Under the supervision of her professors and as part of the Huskie Research Rookies, Lopez is currently conducting a qualitative research study that looks at how the psychological well-being of undocumented suburban college students  is affected by immigration status. The next layer to her study involves a comparative look at college students in Chicago and Los Angeles.
