Karisa Chiu
A 14-year-old violinist from Palatine will perform with the CSA Sinfonia at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, March 5.
Karisa Chiu, winner of the NIU Community School of the Arts Concerto Competition, will play Prokofiev’s Concerto No. 1 in D Major for Violin and Orchestra, Op. 19, Andantino.
Also on the program are the Overture to Egmont, Op. 84 by Beethoven, Prokofiev’s The Montagues and The Capulets from “Romeo and Juliet,” Overture to Candide by Bernstein and selections from Carmen by Bizet.
The concert takes place in the Boutell Memorial Concert Hall of the NIU Music Building. The concert is free and open to the public, and the auditorium is accessible to all.
Chiu won the competition at NIU after a rigorous audition in November. She is a Rachel Barton Pine scholarship recipient at the Music Institute of Chicago’s Academy Program, where she studies violin with Almita Vamos.
Chiu is the daughter of Cornelus and Inah Chiu and attends Fremd High School, where she is a freshman.
She began playing the violin at the age of 3. She has received top prizes from competitions, including the Society of American Musicians Competition, Sejong Music Competition and Chinese Fine Arts Society Competition.
In 2011 and 2013, she was a winner in the string category of the open junior division at the Walgreen’s National Competition. She was recently engaged to perform with the University of Illinois at Chicago Orchestra after her winning audition at the Youth Concerto Competition.
Most recently, she was selected to perform at the Harris Theatre with members of the New World Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Michael Tilson Thomas.
