the organization’s executive director.
Stephanie Richter, assistant director of NIU’s Faculty Development and Instructional Design Center, has been recognized for outstanding contributions and dedicated service to SLATE (Supporting Learning And Technology in Education).
The professional organization is devoted to providing networking opportunities for faculty support staff at institutions across the Midwest.
Established in 2004, the SLATE Star Award recognizes an individual engaged in faculty support who has shown leadership, demonstrated initiatives, presented new ideas, improved procedures, established effective relationships, or provided substantial resources that have aided the general learning technology support community of practice.
Richter was named the 2013 award recipient and accepted the award at the recent SLATE Conference held in October at NIU-Naperville.
She has been an active member of SLATE over the past several years, attending monthly meetings and coordinating the live streaming of sessions for those unable to attend in person. Willing to step-up and serve whenever needed, she has assisted behind the scenes with numerous logistical tasks for relocating the annual SLATE Conference to NIU-Naperville.
This recent award comes on the heels of her recent recognition by Blackboard as a Key to the Blackboard Community for her willingness to share NIU faculty support successes that have benefited teaching and learning initiatives at other institutions.
“Stephanie is certainly deserving of this recognition, as it recognizes the important role that she has had over the past several years in developing the thriving faculty support community that exists here in the Midwest,” said Jason Rhode, director at the Faculty Development and Instructional Design Center. “Many institutions across our region look to her expertise and value her ideas for moving new faculty support initiatives forward.”
“I have learned so much by being part of SLATE and collaborating with other institutions,” Richter said. “I was completely shocked to receive the award, because what I give back can never match what I have gained from them.”
“I am delighted to see Stephanie recognized by SLATE for her contributions to the academic community in the Midwest region,” said Murali Krishnamurthi, associate provost for academic technologies and faculty development. “NIU’s participation in SLATE has not only brought recognition to NIU but also has resulted in NIU benefiting from our interactions with other universities in the region and sharing best practices.”
This award is another in an impressive list of previous accolades for learning technology support the Faculty Development and Instructional Design Center has recently received, including the 2013 Blackboard Staff Development Award and 2013 Blackboard Teaching and Learning Catalyst Award.
