Jazz Ensemble to perform fall concert Nov. 21

Ron CarterDirector Ron Carter and the legendary NIU Jazz Ensemble will perform its fall concert at 8 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 21, in the Duke Ellington Ballroom of the Holmes Student Center.

Rodney Whitaker, an internationally renowned bassist and Mack Avenue recording artist, is the guest artist.

The performance is the last fall concert for Carter, an NIU Board of Trustees professor who is retiring after two decades of building the Jazz Studies program in the School of Music. Carter will lay down the baton after the spring concert.

Whitaker, considered one of the leading performers and teachers of the jazz double bass in the United States, is professor of jazz bass and director of jazz studies at Michigan State University. He is  He is also the artistic director of the Michigan State University Professors of Jazz, former artistic adviser of Jazz @ Wharton Center, director of Detroit Symphony Orchestra’s Civic Jazz Orchestra and a member of the Jazz @ Lincoln Center Orchestra.
