Although the NIU men’s tennis team had some tight matches Saturday, no players advanced to the final eight of the Midwest Regional in Columbus, Ohio.

Axel Lagerlof almost took his first set against top-seeded Peter Kobelt (Ohio State) but fell just short. He eventually dropped the match in straight sets, 7-6, 6-3.

Later in the day, in the doubles draw, Lagerlof played alongside Dor Amir to take on Alex Petrone and Michael Zhu (Michigan). It was another long and tight match, but the NIU duo fell just short, losing 8-7.

Meanwhile, NIU’s Jovan Zeljkovic and Matt Lynch fell 8-5 to Shaun Beinstein and Alex Buzzi (Michigan).

“As a team, this was by far our best tournament in terms of how we played,” said head coach Patrick Fisher. “I am really happy for Axel and Fred. They had been struggling with their singles games, but they picked it up this tournament, no doubt. To add, Matt Lynch has had about as good of a fall season as we could ask for out of a freshman. I think he has really come in and played at a very high level in singles and doubles. I’m looking forward to the spring. We’re playing a big time schedule this year, the toughest we’ve ever played at NIU.”
