Women’s tennis swings for ‘second chances’

Two members of the Northern Illinois women’s tennis team claimed flights Sunday at the the Second Chance Regional, held at the Boylan Tennis Center in Rockford.

Haley Dekkinga (Allegan, Mich./Allegan) and Cristina Alvarez (Zaragoza, Spain/Cristorey and Sagrado Corazon De Jesus) finished in the top three of the flights.

Dekkinga had a finals match against Ali Dawson (MU) in the Singles A bracket, but she fell 6-1, 6-3 in the match. Still, she had the best finish of all Huskies, getting second place in the flight.

Alvarez had a third place match against Claudia Negron (WGB) in the Singles B bracket, winning it 6-4, 6-1.

Ilse Pacheco (San Luis Potosí, Mexico/Alma Patria) also had a third place match, hers coming against Sabrine Navarro (CSU) in the Singles D bracket, but she was unable to finish on top in that one.

In doubles play, Alvarez and Pacheco took on Bolado/Huckabee (CSU) in a match for fifth place, but they ended up dropping the match, 8-2.

The Huskies have less than two weeks to prepare for the final event of the fall, the NIU Invitational, scheduled Friday, Oct. 25, at the Boylan Tennis Center.
