NIU students are invited to apply for the university’s annual congressional internship program in Washington, D.C.
The highly competitive program, open to all majors, will provide four students with the opportunity to live, learn and work in the heart of the nation’s capital. The program runs from late May through early August 2014.
Each student will intern for a member of the Illinois congressional delegation and receive a $6,000 scholarship to cover housing costs and some living expenses.
Housing will be provided by The George Washington University, located in the center of Washington, D.C. Additionally, students will receive a tuition waiver for six credit hours of political science courses.
The goal of the internship program is to give students a real-life experience in the workings of democracy and government.
“This program really brings the classroom to life for students who are interested in politics,” said Matthew Streb, chair of the Department of Political Science and the program’s coordinator. “Many of our previous interns have said that their time in D.C. was the highlight of their undergraduate experience. If you want to work on the Hill as a career, having an internship with a member of Congress is essential.”
Since it was launched in 2009, the program has provided internships for more than 20 NIU students.
All applications for 2014 internships must be received by 4:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 1. Applications are available online or by visiting the political science office in Zulauf 415.
