Northern Illinois University kicker Mathew Sims was named one of the Lou Groza Award’s “Stars of the Week” following his performance in NIU’s 43-39 win over Eastern Illinois, the Palm Beach County Sports Commission announced today.
A native of Hannibal, Mo., Sims was three-for-three field goal attempts and scored 13 points on the night. With the score tied 20-20 with five seconds left in the half, Sims hit an 18-yard field goal to give the Huskies a 23-20 halftime lead. He hit a 33-yarder in the third quarter to give the Huskies a 33-26 advantage in the third.
With the score tied, 33-33, and 11:24 left to play, Sims hit a game-high 37-yard field goal to put the Huskies up 36-33. He has hit seven-of-eight field goals in 2013, and hit a season-long 51-yard field goal at Idaho in the second game of the season.
Sims earned MAC West Special Teams Player of the Week honors after kicking the game-winning field goal with four seconds left at Iowa to give NIU a 30-27 win over the Hawkeyes.
NIU returns to action Saturday, Sept. 28, when the Huskies travel to Purdue.
