The Northern Illinois University softball team had six players named 2013 National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) All-America Scholar Athletes, the organization announced.

Representing Northern Illinois were Kaitlyn Barrett, Kristyn Barrett, Jennifer Barnett, Ashley Kopp, Shelby Miller and Amanda Sheppard.

“These six exemplify what NIU athletics stands for,” NIU head coach Christina Sutcliffe said.

“They are true student-athletes and work equally hard in both areas. JB and Shepp were great leaders on the field, but working hard in the classroom and graduating in four years is the standard with our program. I am proud of all six for their accomplishments.”

This is the second academic honor for Sheppard. The former Huskie shortstop earned Academic All-MAC honors following the 2013 season that saw NIU advance to the championship game of the 2013 MAC Softball Tournament.
