U.S. News and World report has once again named the NIU College of Engineering and Engineering Technology as one of the top 50 engineering programs in America, where the highest available degree is a bachelor’s or master’s degree.
The college ranks 45th on a list of 203 programs. The rankings were published last week.
“We are extremely proud of the fact that we have claimed a spot on this list for more than a decade,” Dean Promod Vohra said. “It speaks to a tradition of excellence and innovation at CEET and sets the bar high as we strive to provide our students with an education that prepares them to be leaders in industry for decades to come.”
The college has programs in mechanical engineering, industrial and systems engineering, electrical engineering and technology. It places a premium on hands-on learning and provides students many opportunities to join faculty in research and to work internships with the college’s many corporate partners.

The college offers students the chance to participate in dozens of clubs and organizations, including those that build and race everything from mini Baja cars and formula cars to fuel-efficient snowmobiles. In recent years, the college has developed a reputation as one of the best in the nation at building high-mileage vehicles.
Students at CEET also have done work in Africa through the college’s very active chapter of Engineers Without Borders. The college also has a very active chapter of the Society of Women Engineers and is very active in efforts to boost interest in STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) careers among middle school and high school students across the university’s service region.
The U.S. News rankings were based upon surveys sent to the dean and a faculty member at each of the engineering programs accredited by ABET, asking them to rank programs on a scale of 1 to 5. CEET earned a score of 2.9.
Only one other Illinois engineering school, Bradley, made the Top 50. Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology tops the list with a score of 4.4.
