Masih Shokrani, associate professor in the NIU Department of Allied Health and Communicative Disorders, has been named a National Academies Education Fellow for 2013-2014.

The National Academies includes the National Academy of Sciences, the National Academy of Engineering and the Institute of Medicine and National Research Council, and advises the Nation on Science, Engineering and Medicine.

Shokrani completed the National Academies Midwest Northstar Summer Institute on Undergraduate Science Education. The summer institute for biology which was organized by the Howard Hughes Medical Institute and the National Academies was held the week of July 7 at the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities.

“More emphasis needs to be given to undergraduate teaching,” said Shokrani, who teaches immunology, medical diagnostic biochemistry and research in the Medical Laboratory Sciences program in the NIU College of Health and Human Sciences. “Attending such an institute is very beneficial to me and I would like to incorporate what I learned from the summer institute in my undergraduate teaching.”

“It’s wonderful that a faculty member from CHHS was able to take advantage of this wonderful opportunity,” Dean Derryl Block added. “We are looking forward to Dr. Shokrani to share what he learned with other faculty.”

Shokrani will present a brown bag seminar on his experience on the summer institute. The time and date of the seminar will be announced in October.
