Northern Illinois head coach Rod Carey welcomed 105 Huskies, including 28 newcomers, to the start of 2013 preseason football camp Sunday at the Jeffrey and Kimberly Yordon Center.

Northern Illinois will hold the first of its 24 preseason practices at 3:35 p.m. today at Huskie Stadium in helmets and shorts.

The Huskies’ preseason camp will run through Saturday, Aug. 24. NIU will practice Monday through Saturday with the first day of practice in pads on Friday, Aug. 9, and the first two-a-day session on Saturday, Aug. 10. All practices are open; the schedule is subject to change.

Carey enters his first full season as NIU head coach with five starters back on defense and eight starters returning on offense, led by 2013 Heisman Trophy candidate Jordan Lynch and the entire offensive line.

The Huskie secondary features three players who started at least six games a year ago in cornerback Marlon Moore (Mobile, Ala./C.F. Vigor HS) and safeties Dechane Durante (Charlotte, N.C./Vance HS) and 2012 leading tackler Jimmie Ward (Mobile, Ala./Davidson HS). Lynch, Ward and offensive tackle Tyler Loos (Sterling, Ill./Sterling HS) all earned All Mid-American Conference honors in 2012.
