ITS to reduce costs, enhance services July 1

June 3, 2013

Photo of piggy bankITS will enhance two key services while reducing their cost: Network Connections and Virtual Servers.

Network Connections

Effective Monday, July 1, 100 MB will be the new standard for network connections. No more 10 MB connections will be installed.

The cost of existing and new 100 MB connectivity will be reduced from $15 to $11 per month (the current cost of 10MB connectivity).

All existing 10 MB connections will be upgraded throughout the upcoming fiscal year. Buildings with infrastructure (hardware and wiring) already capable of supporting 100MB connections will be upgraded by July 1. Buildings which require infrastructure upgrades will be assessed and installation charges will be negotiated with building stakeholders.

As a result of the 100Mb campus upgrades, customers will experience a significant improvement in network throughout without an increase in price.

Stay tuned for more details.

Virtual Servers

ITS uses virtualization technologies to run multiple servers on a host server, saving electricity and space. The host server is interconnected with other host servers to provide service protection. Memory, CPU and storage space can all be customized and can even adjust dynamically in response to spikes in demand.

This service provision helps save departments money and time over procuring and maintaining their own servers.

Memory (GB)CPU UnitsStorage (GB)Monthly Rate
4160$275
41110$300
6160$350
4260$350
62110$425

The cost of data storage will be significantly reduced effective July 1. This is made possible through the assistance of the Division of Finance & Facilities with a storage array purchase. This purchase makes possible price reductions for custom virtual server configurations that include additional service, support and storage as well as standard virtual server configurations.
