Athletics’ ‘NIU Social Summer’ returns for 2013 with daily features highlighting Huskie Pride

June 3, 2013

#NIUSOCIALSUMMERNIU Social Summer is back!

A year ago, NIU Athletics initiated an effort across its social media platforms to keep its fans up-to-date and involved with their favorite athletics program throughout the summer months.

With excitement already building for the 2013 fall sports seasons, the Huskies begin NIU Social Summer “II” today with interesting and engaging features planned for every day of the week.

This year, the Huskies will be counting on fans to not just read and “like” posts, but to participate by sending us photos, tagging yourself and your friends, sharing and retweeting!

Using the hashtag #NIUSocialSummer, the Huskies will bring interactive components to fans Monday through Friday through Aug. 2 using Twitter (@NIUAthletics), Facebook (NIU Huskies), YouTube (NIUHuskiesdotcom) and the official athletics website, NIUHuskies.com. Additional platforms might be added as the summer progresses so keep up, or tell us your preferred way to interact directly with us.

Building off the feelings generated by thousands after the NIU football team’s trip to the Discover Orange Bowl a year ago, Northern Illinois is using the tagline “Be Proud, Be NIU,” this year and NIU Social Summer will use Huskie Pride as one of its daily themes.

Here’s a quick preview of what to expect every day of the week.

Memories on Mondays – Every Monday, we’ll focus on one topic in NIU history. It may be a game, a season, a player or even a building. Then it’s up to you to tweet, post or send us your memories of that topic. A great chance to remember some of the proudest moments/people and places in Huskie history.

Tag Yourself Tuesdays – Every Tuesday, we’ll feature a different group photo from a Huskie event on Twitter and Facebook. The photos might be a crowd shot, a team photo, or a photo from an event – a tailgate to a women’s clinic or golf tournament. Let us know you were there and share the picture with your friends and followers.

Where’s Your Pride Wednesdays – Wednesdays are for you, the fans. Send us pictures of you, your friends and family in Huskie gear. Maybe the pics are from a game you attended, or maybe they are from your summer vacation trip to someplace near or far. So be sure to “wear” your NIU gear all summer and then join us for “Where’s Your Pride Wednesdays.”

Pride in Progress Thursdays – With construction on the Chessick Practice Center at a fever pitch, work on a new scoreboard and auxiliary press box at Huskie Stadium under way and lights set to be installed at the NIU Track & Field/Soccer Complex this summer, there is plenty of progress going on at Northern Illinois. Every Thursday, you’ll get an update on one of these projects.

Huskie Football Fridays – Catch up on the latest happenings with Huskie Football as NIU players, coaches and staff prepare for the 2013 season. Read or watch an interview, hear a quote, catch the links or find out a fun Huskie football fact.

In addition to the daily topics, NIU Social Summer, along with Northern Illinois Football (@PrideinthePack on Twitter, Northern Illinois Football on Facebook) is counting down the days to the 2013 Huskie football season opener Saturday, Aug. 31, at Iowa with a daily graphic highlighting players and coaches on the NIU football roster. Share it, retweet it and join in the countdown.

During the summer, NIUHuskies.com will be the site for at least six live “chats” with Northern Illinois Athletics coaches, staff and even players.

Approximately every other week during NIU Social Summer, Athletics will host a chat and invite fans to participate by sending in questions either prior to or during the chat.

Among the guests planned for the chats are Rod Carey, Mark Montgomery, Ray Gooden and even Jordan Lynch, among others. Keep checking NIUHuskies.com for the chat schedule and mark the dates and times on your calendar to join in the conversation.

If you aren’t following NIU Athletics on social media, now is the time! In addition to the main athletics accounts, visit NIU’s Social Media Headquarters.
