TheNorthern Illinois women’s golf team sits in the top 10 after first round play at the Lady Bison Spring Classic at Paiute Golf Club Thursday.

NIU scored a 320, two shots out of eighth place Bucknell and 24 strokes behind leader Nova Southeastern (296). The Huskies lead Western Illinois (323), Creighton (324), North Dakota (330) and Idaho State (336).

“We did OK, a little higher that our last tournament,” said NIU head coach Kim Kester. “We’re giving away shots we know we shouldn’t be giving away. We’re just looking to improve tomorrow. We have an earlier start time tomorrow. The morning teams had a little bit more of an advantage not playing in the wind as we had playing in the wind that picked up in the afternoon.”

Senior Allie Parthie (Marinette, Wis./Marinette) is tied for seventh with a team best first round 75. Taylor Ellett (Hampshire, Ill./Hampshire) is in 34th with an 80, while her sister Connie Ellett (Hampshire, Ill./Hampshire) is 44th after carding an 82.

Jenny Niemiec (St. Charles, Ill./St. Charles East) sits in 49th after scoring an 83 and Casey LaBarbera (Marinette, Wis./Marinette), who posted an 85, is in 59th and rounds out the Huskie competitors.

The Huskies return to the course for final round play today with a shotgun start at 10 a.m. CT.
