The Northern Illinois track & field team finished in 10th place Saturday at the Mid-American Conference Indoor Championships in Ypsilanti, Mich.

The Huskies accumulated 16 points in the meet, a total that was keyed by Janay Mitchell’s second place finish and a pair of sixth place showings from Megan Gregory and Jamie Burr.

“The conference meet is about putting points on the board,” said NIU head coach Connie Teaberry.

“The ladies competing today did just that. All of our ladies that advanced to finals in their events showed strong efforts. We are looking forward to continuing to improve our performances. We need more depth to make a dent in the place standings and that’s where our next recruiting class will help next season,” she added. “The ladies are hungry for outdoors. We are ready to set new standards and achieve new goals.”

Mitchell took the silver in the 60 meters with a career-best time of 7.52. Entering the day as the top seed in the event, the senior came just short of the title, falling to Kent State’s Katie Reiser by six-hundredths of a second. The second-place finish, however, gave the Huskies a critical eight points.

In the 60 hurdles, Gregory finished in sixth place behind an 8.67 run. The Huskie sprinter scored three points for NIU by easily outpacing Western Michigan’s Iris Campbell and Toledo’s Jillian Sledge.

Burr scored her first individual MAC championship points with a sixth place finish in the 800 meters. The sophomore clocked in at 2:14.88 to beat Miami (Ohio)’s Taylor Wickware and Central Michigan’s Charnele Lyons to the line.

The 4×400 relay team of Alexandra Rowe, Jenelle McCalla, Kristal Pitts and Julianne Cronin took eighth with a season-best time of 3:53.97. The quartet beat out Akron’s relay team for the final point in the event.

In her first MAC meet, Meghan Heuer placed 11th in the mile with a season-best time of 4:57.99. The St. Charles, Ill., native’s mark is one of the fastest in program history and is just three seconds behind the school record held by Alicja Czajka since 2005.

For the triple jump, Ellen Renk jumped 35-05.00 (10.79m) to take 14th, while Alex Schad was 16th at 34-08.25 (10.57m). Ida Burbulla tied for 17th with a height of 5-01.75 (1.57m) in the high jump.
