Intercollegiate Athletics and the University Honors Program will celebrate “University Honors Night” during the NIU men’s basketball game Wednesday, Jan. 30.

A ceremony is planned at halftime of the 7 p.m. game at the Convocation Center, and other activities will take place during the evening.

Because NIU Huskie athletes are committed to excellence both off and on the courts, the staff at Athletics wanted to recognize their students and honors students for their hard work and dedication.

“The Honors Program here at Northern Illinois University is home to some of the best and brightest students on campus who represent a diverse pool of academic interests and talents,” said Elizabeth Tovar, director of the Office of Student-Athlete Academic Support Services (SAASS).

“I am also proud to say that last fall our student-athletes had another successful semester as NIU’s athletics teams earned a cumulative GPA of 3.06,” Tovar added. “We have highly motivated and driven student-athletes who helped us achieve this record, and many of those individuals serve as great leaders and role models within the University Honors Program.”

Christopher Jones, associate vice provost for University Honors, emphasizes the importance of collaborating with campus partners such as SAASS to promote the success of every University Honors student.

“We can’t be successful unless we work closely with other department,” Jones said, “and Intercollegiate Athletics is an especially strong partner.”

“We are eager to continue our collaboration with the Honors Program by encouraging more student athletes to (participate) and making it a defining experience in their NIU college career,” Tovar said.
