Students are invited to cheer on the NIU Huskies as they travel to the Discover Orange Bowl in Miami for the first BCS bowl appearance in NIU and Mid-American Conference history!

Northern Illinois University announced the student fan bus package for the Orange Bowl, and within 10 minutes, the initial allotment of travel packages sold out! However, the university is constantly adding more spaces to accommodate the tremendous demand by NIU students.

“What I’m trying to do with the allotment that we have is make sure that every NIU student who wishes to can find a way to Miami to be a part of this Orange Bowl experience, which for them may be once in a lifetime–or at least during their four years here,” said NIU president John G. Peters. “So we’re putting money into buses to go down, and the Mid-American Conference wants to help us do that.”

Students are encouraged to register to waitlist for student travel packages through the Student Involvement website.  New busses and hotels are constantly being added, and student travel requests are being processed on a first-come, first-served basis.  The deadline to register on the waitlist is 4 p.m. Friday, Dec. 7.

The student travel package includes:

  • Bus travel to and from the Miami area;
  • Selected meals;
  • Two nights in a South Florida hotel (Monday, Dec. 31, and Tuesday, Jan. 1);
  • Travel between the hotel and the game.

The cost of the student travel package is $150 (plus a $12 processing fee). Students will be responsible for some meals and any additional personal costs associated with this trip.

Game tickets are available for free for NIU students through the NIU Convocation Center Ticket Office for pickup in Miami with a valid student ID card.

Discover Orange Bowl logoReserve football game tickets at the Convocation Center before arriving the day of the trip. Buses will depart Sunday, Dec. 30, from DeKalb and return Thursday, Jan. 3.

Because of the number of students participating, multiple hotels will be used in the northern Miami and Ft. Lauderdale areas. In most situations, four students will be assigned to a room. Hotel rooming requests will be available; Student Involvement & Leadership Development will do its best to accommodate those requests.

The student travel package will only be available to currently enrolled NIU students in good standing with the university. Student fan bus package tickets are non-transferable and non-refundable.
