Huskie football fans urged to recycle

September 25, 2012

Photo of a cheering NIU Huskies football fanNIU aims to score big for recycling at the remaining home football games by having teams of volunteers fan out across the Huskie Stadium tailgating venues to help fans recycle.

At every remaining home NIU football game this season (Sept. 29, , Oct. 13, Nov. 3 and Nov. 14), NIU’s environmental student clubs, in collaboration with NIU Recycling and NIU Environmental Studies, will collect recyclable materials during the tailgate events.

Other student organizations are invited to get involved; individuals or organizations that wish to participate should contact Melissa Burlingame at (815) 753-5987 or mburlingame@niu.edu.

During the tailgate events, there are blue bins with the white label “RECYCLE” placed throughout the tailgate grounds. They are typically placed next to the white bins, which are used for landfill waste. Using the blue bins for recycling follows the revamped recycling and landfill system adopted on campus.

If you are planning to tailgate, volunteers might approach and request that you attach a plastic recycling bag for collection of recyclable goods near your areas. If you are unsure about what can and cannot be recycled, feel free to ask the volunteers to explain what is and is not recyclable.

During the Nov. 14 tailgate, NIU will participate in the Campus Game Day Challenge and America Recycles Day. Volunteers for this event are appreciated.
