NIU’s centers for Southeast Asian Studies (CSEAS), Burma Studies (CBS) and Latino and Latin America Studies (CLLAS) will host an open house from 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 30, on College View Court, east of the Newman Center.
The event welcomes students and faculty back to campus and introduces them to the facilities and programs provided by the three centers, including scholarships, fellowships, study abroad opportunities and minors.
Faculty associates of the programs will be on hand to talk with the students.
The Center for Latino and Latin American Studies will provide information on cultural programs, colloquia, the upcoming Latin Jazz Dance Party, film screenings and other events organized to celebrate Latino Heritage Month (Sept. 15 to Oct. 15). More information on these events can be found online.
Two student organizations, the Latino Student Alliance and DREAM Action NIU, also will provide information to students.
Two Southeast Asia student organizations, the Southeast Asia Club and the Burma Interest Group-NIU, will offer information on their activities, which include cultural events, including noodle nights, films, volunteer projects and a student conference. All are open to NIU students.
The Center for Southeast Asian Studies, a federally funded National Resource Center, is celebrating its 50th anniversary during the fall and spring semesters with exhibits, films, lectures, performances and other special events.
The open house will also feature traditional Southeast Asian and Latin American music, food, games and prizes.
