Akeem Springs (Waukegan, Ill. / Waukegan Township) has signed a letter of intent to join the Northern Illinois men’s basketball team, NIU head coach Mark Montgomery announced Thursday.
“In high school Akeem was a do-it-all player and at the college level we see him as a combo guard,” Montgomery said.
“I think he can play the one, two or the three. He is a good athlete and a very good catch-and-shoot shooter. Akeem is a good rebounding guard; he already has good size and strength. He is a good student and a good all-around player and I think the sky is the limit for him.”
As a senior at Waukegan Township High School, the 6-foot-3 Springs averaged 16.7 points and 8.4 rebounds per game while leading the Bulldogs to the Central Suburban South Championship under head coach Ron Ashlaw.
Springs earned All-Lake County First Team honors from the Lake County News-Sun and was named to play in the Lake County Senior Shootout on April 13 where he scored a game-high 20 points.
Springs was also named to the 2012 Illinois Basketball Coaches Association 3A/4A All-State Third Team.
During his junior season at Waukegan, Springs averaged 22 points and seven rebounds per game. Springs also helped Waukegan reach the state finals in 2009 and 2010, a first for the Bulldogs since 1975.
Springs becomes the sixth member of the incoming freshmen class.
Daveon Balls (Indianapolis, Ind./Lawrence North), Darrell Bowie (Wautwatosa, Wis./Wautwatosa East/La Jolla Prep [Calif.]), Mike Davis (Garfield Heights, Ohio/Garfield Heights) and Sam Mader (Appleton, Wis./Appleton East) signed with the Huskies during the November signing period while Travon Baker (Detroit, Mich./Detroit Consortium) inked with NIU last week.
