Northern Illinois is one of 13 teams in weekend field
The meet gets under way at 2 p.m. Friday, April 13, with the hammer, followed by relays that night at 5 p.m. Action resumes Saturday morning at 11 a.m. with the discus and 3000 steeplechase.
“We are taking a small group over to Western Illinois and a lot of the athletes are scaling back in the events they compete in this weekend,” said Huskie head coach Connie Teaberry.
“The staff will use this meet to clean up some technique issues we saw last weekend and the athletes will be looking to improve marks to better their placement in the next three meets which include the MAC Championships. I’m expecting to see strong performances.”
NIU will join 12 other schools at Hanson Field for the two-day meet.
Among the top competitors at the meet are Marquette, Bradley, Chicago State and the host Leathernecks. Ashford, Augustana, Hannibal-LaGrange, Illinois College, Lincoln, Monmouth, Quincy and St. Ambrose will also be a part of the scored meet.
The Huskies will be looking to take first place at the second straight scored meet this weekend after claiming the top spot at last weekend’s Chicagoland Intercollegiate Championships.
Northern outscored second place DePaul and third place UIC with 174 points.
Individually, Rasheta Butler (100 meters), Roneisha Frye (100 hurdles), Chanel Kellyman (200 meters), Rebecca Cronin (800 meters), Sidra Sherrill (shot put) and the 4×100 relay all took home wins on the day.
