Interested in helping first-year students learn how to succeed at NIU? Apply to become a UNIV 101/201 instructor for fall 2012.

UNIV 101 is a one-credit, 12-week course focused on helping first-year students develop the essential academic and social skills needed to make an enjoyable and successful transition to NIU. UNIV 201 is a similar course designed specifically for transfer students.

In fall 2011, 84 sections of UNIV 101/201 were offered and 1,500 first-year NIU students enrolled.

As a UNIV 101/201 instructor, you can impact the experiences of these new students and provide them with resources to help them adjust to life at NIU.

Instructors must:

  • be current or retired members of the NIU faculty, staff or administration;
  • hold master’s degrees;
  • have prior teaching experience.

Candidates who do not meet the last two criteria can be paired with teaching coaches.

It is highly recommended that new instructors attend one of three overview meetings to learn more about the position from First-Year Connections staff and experienced UNIV instructors. RSVP to firstconn@niu.edu with the date you plan to attend. Those who are unable to attend because of prior commitments should contact Kelly Melvin at kmelvin@niu.edu.

Instructor overview sessions:

  • Wednesday, Feb. 29, noon in the Holmes Student Center Douglas Room
  • Thursday, March 1, 10:30 a.m. in the HSC Room 506
  • Tuesday, March 6, 3 p.m. in the HSC Douglas Room

UNIV 101/201 instructors typically receive a stipend of $1,000 for teaching an individual section or $500 for co-instructing. Once hired, all instructors are required to attend training workshops, department meetings and participate in course feedback through email correspondence and surveys.

Applications are due Monday, March 19
