The Northern Illinois cross country team was awarded All-Academic Team honors by the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association, the association announced Wednesday.

In order to qualify, a team must have competed and compiled a team score at a 2011 NCAA Regional Championship and have a minimum 3.0 grade point average as a team.

“Being successful both academically and athletically is an expectation we have for ourselves,” said Huskie head coach Greg Hipp. “It is a great reward for our ladies to receive this honor for their hard work in the classroom.”

Overall, NIU is one of 205 schools named to the list and rank ahead of schools like Penn, Rutgers, Ohio State and Virginia with a 3.23 cumulative GPA. The Huskies are one of 10 MAC teams to make the list, joining Akron, Bowling Green, Buffalo, Central Michigan, Eastern Michigan, Kent State, Miami (Ohio), Ohio and Western Michigan.

Among those schools, NIU is tied with Akron for the sixth-highest GPA among member schools.

The team features three athletes who have a 3.5 GPA or higher, including Academic All-MAC honoree Courtney Oldenburg, Katie Janssen and Jamie Burr.
