SURS to offer seminars on self-managed plan

Photo of gold pocket watch and retirement greeting cardSURS is offering three Self-Managed Plan (SMP) education seminars for members enrolled in the Self-Managed Plan.

These three one-day seminars are scheduled for Thursday, March 8; Thursday, April 12; and Thursday, May 24.

All three seminars will be held at the SURS office in Champaign .

Topics will include:

Social Security
9:45 a.m.

A Social Security representative will be available to discuss your eligibility for Social Security and Medicare, how your Social Security benefit is affected by SURS, and other general Social Security information.

Insurance
11 a.m.

An insurance representative will present information on eligibility, coverage, cost and dependent information for both state of Illinois Insurance and the College Insurance Plan (CIP).

Self-Managed Plan
1 p.m.

  • Self-Managed Plan statistics
  • Purchasing additional service credit cost, availability, ways to purchase, how the purchase may benefit you
  • How to transfer your funds and reallocate your contributions
  • Applying for your retirement benefit
  • Contacting Fidelity and TIAA-CREF
  • Use of the Self-Managed Plan Participant Website

Fidelity Investments
2:30 p.m.

A Fidelity representative will discuss “Building a Portfolio For Any Weather.”

TIAA-CREF
3:30 p.m.

A TIAA-CREF representative will discuss “Retirement Income Options.”

Members who are unable to attend one of these sessions can view Self-Managed Plan educational videos online.

State Universities Retirement System (SURS) of Illinois logoSURS also is offering four spring retirement education seminars for members enrolled in the Traditional and Portable plans. These popular one-day seminars will be held from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the SURS office in Champaign and are scheduled Wednesday, April 11; Tuesday, April 24; and Tuesday, May 22.

The enrollment fee is $25 per member and $10 for a non-member guest. Lunch will be provided. Contact Karen Maggio at (217) 378-8813 or kmaggio@surs.org to register.

    • What happens after you retire – Preliminary Estimated Payment stage (PEP), Taxes, Automatic Annual Increase (AAI), returning to work after retirement
