Track, field heads to Indiana

January 26, 2012

Huskie track & fieldComing off of a strong performance last week at the Illini Classic, the Northern Illinois track & field team will look to keep their momentum going Saturday at the IWU Invitational hosted by Indiana Wesleyan.

The meet gets under way at noon ET with the women’s 5000 meters and a host of field events opening up action inside the Troyer Fieldhouse.

“(This meet) will give the girls an opportunity to go up against some good competition and give us a prelude to what the MAC Championships will hold in the next three to four weeks,” said Huskie head coach Connie Teaberry.

The Huskies will be going up against 10 other teams at the meet, including Mid-American Conference rival Ball State, NAIA power and host Indiana Wesleyan, Indiana Tech and Trinity Christian, among other schools.

NIU and BSU went head-to-head last year at this same meet, with the Cardinals taking first place at the 2011 IWU Invitational. Despite five Northern event titles, the Cardinals outscored the Huskies, 203-147.5, to take top honors.

“Every meet that we compete in, we want to be at the top, no matter who is there or where we’re at,” Teaberry said. “I do think the girls will have an added incentive to be at the top of their game because it is MAC competition.”

The Huskies are looking to capitalize off of last week’s third place finish at the Illini Classic, where they scored in 14 of the meet’s 16 events to score 81 points overall. Though no NIU athlete won an event, eight different Huskies set personal records inside the UI Armory. In addition, Northern earned 13 top-five finishes in Champaign, Ill.
