NIU football defensive lineman Nabal Jefferson (Chicago, Ill./Marist) earned Capital One Academic All-District 5 first team accolades, the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) announced Thursday.

Jefferson, a junior, boasts a 3.91 grade point average in accountancy and is in the midst of a career year. The 5-11, 280-pound nose guard has a career-high 28 tackles, including one and a half tackles for loss through 10 games this season.

The highlight of the season so far for Jefferson came against Kent State when he intercepted his first career pass and returned it 25 yards for his first career touchdown.

Jefferson is the first Huskie to earn CoSIDA Academic All-District honors since Jon Brost and Craig Rusch in 2008.

One of five Mid-American Conference Capital One Academic All-District first team selections, Jefferson is joined by defensive lineman Colby Way of Buffalo, wide receivers Briggs Orsbon of Ball State and Cody Wilson of Central Michigan and kicker John Potter of Western Michigan as MAC student-athletes named to one of the academic all-district teams.

The Huskies (7-3, 5-1) are back in action Tuesday, Nov. 15, when NIU welcomes Ball State to Huskie Stadium. Kickoff for the MAC West showdown is set for 7 p.m.

Tuesday night’s contest which will be televised nationally on ESPNU is the annual “Blackout” game where fans are asked to wear black. There will also be a post-game fireworks show. Tickets are available online or by calling 800-745-3000.
