Northern Illinois University quarterback Chandler Harnish (Bluffton, Ind./Norwell) is one of 66 players named to the Maxwell Award Watch List. Given to America’s most outstanding college football player, the award is named in honor of sportswriter Robert W. “Tiny” Maxwell.

Harnish, a senior, put together the best year of his career in 2010 and arguably one of the best seasons ever by a Huskie quarterback. He threw for 2,530 yards and 21 touchdowns on 189-of-292 passing in 13 starts last season. Harnish led the Huskies to a school record 11 wins, including an 8-0 mark in Mid-American Conference play and became the first Huskie signal caller in school history to earn first team All-MAC honors.

A three-time MAC West Offensive Player of the Week, also a first for a Huskie quarterback, Harnish tallied a school record 3,366 yards of total offense last season and his 7,332 yards of career total offense also stands a school record. He ranks in the top five in four other single-season categories and in the top five in six categories on NIU’s career charts. He led the league and was 16th in nation with a 157.8 pass efficiency rating.

Harnish capped his record-breaking season earning Most Valuable Player honors at the uDrove Humanitarian Bowl after completing 17-of-26 passing for 300 yards and a touchdown while rushing for 72 yards and two scores in a 40-17 victory over Fresno State. The Touchdown Club of Columbus named Harnish the 2010 Mid-American Conference Player of the Year.

There are 31 quarterbacks on the Maxwell Award Watch List but Harnish is the only player on the list representing the Mid-American Conference.
