This year, the army of volunteers from the NIU community will fan out Saturday, April 16, to paint, rake, clean sweep and repair agencies’ buildings and yards.

If the turnout is anything like last year’s, computer keyboards will be smoking, said Becky Harlow, assistant director of NIU’s Student Involvement and Leadership Development.

“Last year, we had 2,000 volunteers for NIU Cares Day,” Harlow said. “I would like to see more this year. It certainly has gained popularity in the five years since it was started at NIU.”

NIU Cares DaySocial service and government agencies in DeKalb County supplied the chores, and teams of volunteers supplied the hands and backs to complete them.

They have completed such projects as spreading mulch and raking leaves in local parks to helping library volunteers sort books for sales.

“Last year, we also helped three to four disabled residents with small projects,” Harlow said.
