NIU student group Mortar Board, in collaboration with the Honors Program and the Women’s Resource Center, are joining forces to collect gowns for the second annual Project Prom.

The gown and accessories collection is happening now and will continue through 4 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 17.

From 1 to 5 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 19, and Sunday, Feb. 20, NIU students will transform Conexión Comunidad, 637 N. 11th St. in DeKalb, into a dress boutique. All area high school girls are invited to come and select formal gowns for free.

The event is open to all girls in DeKalb County and surrounding areas.

The purpose of the project is to ensure that, even in tough economic times, every girl has a chance to go to prom in a dress that makes her feel beautiful.

This marks the second time campus groups have combined for Project Prom. Last year, NIU students collected more than 300 gowns and gave them away at a one-day event open to all local high school girls.

Organizers currently are accepting donations of gowns, formal jewelry, handbags and shoes. Drop-off locations from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday are:

  • NIU Honors Program, Campus Life 110, at the corner of Lucinda Avenue and Normal Road on the NIU campus.
  • Women’s Resource Center, 105 Normal Road, at the corner with West Lincoln Highway on the NIU campus.
