Campus Power and System Outage

December 6, 2010

At approximately 1:15 p.m. Monday afternoon NIU experienced a power outage in several campus buildings while electricians performing routine maintenance at a Carroll Avenue substation encountered a damaged power cable.

Buildings affected by the power outage were: Davis, Faraday, LaTourette, and Swen Parson Halls. These buildings, along with additional campus buildings were also affected by network outages as a result of the power failure.

Campus electricians were able to restore power to the affected buildings gradually beginning at approx. 3:30 pm. Power to all classroom buildings was restored by 4:15 pm. Some 2 p.m. examinations in Faraday and LaTourette Halls and some 4 p.m. exams in Davis Hall were postponed and rescheduled for Friday, December 10 at their originally scheduled times.

Students with questions regarding the revised exam schedule should contact their professor or office of their major college.

Access to the NIU Website, Blackboard, Groupwise and the student email systems were restored as of 8:20 p.m.  Access to the “My NIU” student information system was restored shortly after 10 p.m. on Monday evening.
