Business launches career exploration program

Career CompassNIU’s College of Business is launching this fall its new career exploration program. Career Compass is for first-year students who have indicated a desire to pursue a degree in business.

The program will engage student in self-, major- and career-exploration immediately at the onset of their college careers and is designed to help them select specific business majors and careers based on information and evidence that suggests they will be both satisfied and successful.

Upon completion of the program, students will be:

  • able to identify their interests, abilities and motivators,
  • more motivated to complete their majors,
  • more satisfied with their majors,
  • less likely to switch majors after their ophomore years, and
  • more confident they will be satisfied and successful in their careers.

The program includes a four-part workshop sequence.

KICK-OFF (Fall of Year 1)
Learn about the nuts and bolts of the Career Compass program and hear from a dynamic guest speaker who is sure to inspire and get you thinking critically about selecting a major and a career as well as how you’ll spend your years at NIU.

DISCOVERY: WHO AM I (Fall of Year 1)
Used by more than 300 top business schools and corporations, CareerLeader® software provides an individualized report on your unique profile of interests, abilities, and motivators. After completing the online assessment, attend this workshop to interpret your results and discover how to utilize the other components of this valuable resource relative to your selection of a major and a career.

DECISION: MY MAJOR (Spring of Year 1)
Allow department faculty, staff, and alumni to introduce you to the distinctive characteristics of each of the six majors in the College of Business. Leave better informed on what separates the majors and the career and employment options to which they lead and also better able to make connections between the majors and your assessment results.

DESTINATION: MY CAREER (Fall of Year 2)
Consider this workshop your crash course in professionalism. Gain knowledge in the areas of resumes, cover letters, networking, and interviewing. Additionally, learn the importance of internships, how to conduct an internship search, and how to get the most out of attending internship and job fairs.
