Teens can jazz it up with Community School

August 20, 2010

The CSJazz Band has room for a few more musicians!

Feel the beat and find your groove in this top-notch high school regional jazz band, sponsored by NIU’s Community School of the Arts.

The openings are for trumpet, trombone, bass, piano and drums. Interested players need to be between the ages of 14 and 20 and are expected to audition. To schedule an audition, call the community school office at (815) 753-1450.

Rehearsals begin Sunday, Sept. 12. The group rehearses throughout the school year from 6:15 to 8:15 p.m. Sundays in the NIU Music Building on the NIU campus.

The group is directed by Donnie Norton, an alumnus of the famous NIU Jazz Ensemble. He directed the group in 2009 and plays saxophone in the Chicago area.

This is one of many classes and ensembles that are offered at the NIU Community School of the Arts this fall. Scholarships are available; the deadline to apply is Monday, Aug. 30. Application forms are available online. The office is located on campus in Room 132 of the Music Building.
